What’s the difference between Microblading, Powder Brows, and Combo Brows?

Microblading creates a natural looking brow using a single needle tool. The artist makes a shallow cut at the surface of the skin and fills it with ink. The point of microblading is to mimic hair strokes, not to look like makeup. Clients typically see a retention of 6-8 months before needing a touch-up. It is ideal for those who have normal to dry skin.

Powder Brows are on the other end of the spectrum—they are perfect for clients who want to wake up with the “makeup look.” Powder brows are done with a permanent cosmetic tattoo machine. Technology has greatly advanced from the days of your auntie’s blue/gray tattooed eyebrows. Modern day tattoo machines used for permanent cosmetics are much softer and are not able to penetrate the skin too deeply. Clients typically see a retention of 1-3 years before needing a touch-up.

Combo Brows are combination of microblading and Powder Brows. Microblading is used to achieve fluffier fronts while the tattoo machine is used to define your arches. Combo brows typically look like you just filled them in with a pencil or brow powder. Clients see a retention of 1-3 years before needing a touch-up.

What are the perfect brows for me?

This depends on your skin type and lifestyle. Everyone’s skin reacts differently to microblading and Powder Brows. Some clients need frequent touch-ups while others can come back in 1.5 years.

Microblading retains color best on normal to dry skin. Clients with oily skin who have had microblading may need a touch-up every 6 months.

Powder Brows and Combo Brows are great for all skin types. It is especially recommended if you are oily or engage in heavy exercise.
